VCL Story & Timeline

The history of Village Church of Lincolnshire (VCL) begins in the mid-1970s when local church members and faculty of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) took an interest in planting a new church. Professor David Hesselgrave approached some colleagues at Trinity, including Walt Kaiser and Paul Feinberg, who expressed interest in his prospective church plant. In April of 1975, the small group began meeting together for prayer and Bible study. Though they were not yet holding services, the Bible study began looking into purchasing some land, and through loans from Redeemer Evangelical Free Church in Milwaukee, WI and the Evangelical Free Church (EFCA) Superintendent, the fledgling congregation was able to purchase the land where VCL now sits.

On May 28, 1975, when, at an organizational business meeting, it was decided that a new EFCA church was to be founded; they named it Lincolnshire Evangelical Free Church and met at Marriott Lincolnshire Resort. The church moved to the Daniel Wright Junior High School and then again to Laura Sprague School on Riverwoods Road.

On June 16, 1976, Dr. Paul Engle was invited to pastor this new congregation. By 1978 the congregation began preparing to construct their permanent place of worship. Construction took about a year, and the building was dedicated in September of 1982.

Pastor Engle left the church in 1985. Leroy Scheumann served as the next Senior Pastor and Kenny King as Associate and Youth Pastor. Rick Duncan arrived in 1992. Pastor Lee Eclov, who was hired as the next senior pastor, began his ministry on February 2, 1998.

By 2003, VCL added the great room and several more classrooms, updating the décor, and turning it into the building we have today. Associate pastors who have served, include Jared Smith in 2000, Michael Mauriello in 2010, Jamie Morrison in 2016, and Casey Dwyer in 2019.

Pastor Lee retired on February 2, 2020, ending his 22 years of faithful service. Through the years of the pandemic, the church was led well by Kenny Silva as interim pastor and Associate Pastor, Casey Dwyer. They shepherded the church through the difficult season of change and transition. Our current Senior Pastor, Jim Renke, began his ministry in October, 2021.
