Guide for Home Worship: 3/28/21
Palm Sunday: Here Comes the King
This Palm Sunday, we take up the centuries-long tradition of remembering and celebrating Jesus’ “triumphal” entry into Jerusalem. As we do, we’ll also prepare our hearts for Holy Week, for the King’s journey to His throne is unlike anything we’d expect.
A Song for the Journey – During the season of Lent, the texts for our weekly Call to Worship will come from a group of Psalms called the Songs of Ascent.
Traveling music was familiar to God’s Old Testament people. Annually making their way to Jerusalem for festivals and worship, the people of Israel would sing. Some of those songs, known as the Songs of Ascent, eventually became part of the Book of Psalms – Psalms 120 to 134.
These traveling songs reflected themes of the heart – the spiritual temperature of God’s people as they walked along the road “ascending” up to Jerusalem to worship at the temple.
The Psalms of Ascent include songs of preparation, songs recalling God’s grace, songs of lament, and songs of joy. Each song points to the lifelong journey of obedience to God.
Hour in the Word: There will be no Hour in the Word this Sunday due to the Palm Sunday Breakfast. Our current series, The Basics of Sharing Christ, will resume with a basic summary of the gospel on Easter Sunday (4/4) from 9:30-10:15am. We’d encourage you to join us as we focus on how the reality of the resurrection is the basis of all our work to share Jesus with the world.
Hearts for Kids 2021 – This year, we are focusing on deliberate, daily prayer for our children at VCL during our annual “Hearts for Kids” season. Every week we’ll be praying for a specific age group of children, first from the pulpit and then daily in our devotional time (download the devotional guide here). We encourage you to join us in this task, and we hope you’ll come away from these next six weeks more aware of the Lord’s heart for children and the specific children he has blessed us with at VCL.
Tenebrae Service – Our Good Friday worship service, April 2 at 7:00 p.m. will be a traditional Tenebrae service, contemplating the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a lovely but somber and quiet service, led by VCL musicians and selected readers. This year we will again focus on the seven last phrases Christ uttered from the cross (known as the “Seven Last Words”), along with companion scripture passages from Psalm 22 and the Gospels. Because of the serious content and periods of silent reflection, this service may not be appropriate for children. Childcare will not be provided, but the service will be live-streamed for our home worshipers.
Spare Rooms open for families with Small Children – As we’ve seen more and more VCL families (and some new!) return to in-person worship, we wanted to provide some dedicated space for parents of small children during the service. From now until the nursery and 2s-3s ministries are restarted, the nursery, 2s-3s room, rooms 103 and 104 (down the hall toward the Great Room) will be open for parents of small children to have as a separate space during the service. These rooms will be limited to one-family per Sunday, and there will be a clipboard for parents to signal that they used the space so it can be cleaned. Rooms will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Have you been baptized? We are beginning to make plans for baptisms at our Easter Sunday service, April 4. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ and you have not been baptized, this is your opportunity to obey the Lord in this key ordinance. Speak to Pastors Kenny or Casey if you would like more information.
Prayer… If you would like for people from our church to pray for you at any time, please send your request directly to firstname.lastname@example.org. Once approved by one of our pastors, your request will go straight out to our prayer list.
Offering Envelopes: We would encourage you to use last year’s offering envelopes (date not important) if you still have them. If you do not and would like envelopes with your envelop number please contact the church office with the number of envelopes you would need (example: one time a month, every other week, etc.). The Finance Committee appreciates when you use your numbered envelopes as this makes their job more efficient.
If you’re not receiving our emails – please contact the church office at email@example.com to be added to our email list. We would be happy for you to receive the information that is forwarded each week. Also any who would like to be added to the “prayer request list” may also contact the church office.
Missions Committee: As mentioned in the Transition Team’s report, the majority of VCL members want to see their church more involved in local outreach and ministry. The Missions Committee is going to work on that this year. The first step will be praying for ideas on what we could consider doing. Please pray and submit ideas God brings to mind for local outreach and ministry opportunities and send suggestions to Ed Manzo. Also, if you are interested in joining the Missions Committee, please contact him. Thank you.
Would you like to use the Great Room? The Great Room is now available for groups of 25 or less to use throughout the week. To keep things safe and sanitary, you’ll need to reserve a time and follow a set of guidelines we’ve developed. For more information, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Not-So Daily Office: Pastors Kenny and Casey are on Facebook Live at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. During this time they will read a scripture passage and have a time of prayer. Copies of these times of worship will then be posted on our website: evcl.org/daily-office
