Guide for Home Worship: 10/2/22

Painful Trials

Through the sermon this week, Pastor Jim Renke will continue his series on The Way of Becoming.  Specifically, we’ll see how God engages us through the trials we face. From the story of Job, we will see God’s desire to make himself known and set us on a path of reorientation.  Let’s gather to worship around His table, through prayer, song and the Word. Let’s pray for him to lead us toward becoming all he’s called and empowered us to be.

General Announcements

Living Christianly in a Post-Christian World – Mini-series in Hour in the Word – Bryan Just will be teaching a short series on the ins and outs of following Christ in a society which has little to no consensus on things like God, religion, eternity, and the value of human life. Join him on 9/25 and 10/2 at 9am in the Great room!

Blessed Endurance: the message of the Book of Revelation —Fall series in Hour in the Word – The book of Revelation has a reputation. For some of us, it confuses, bewilders, and scares us. For others, we think it is full of hidden codes, secret allusions, and geopolitical predictions. Yet this book was written, not to confuse or even give exact predictions of the future, but to fill God’s people with hope, a hope so strong that it gives us the power to endure anything that comes our way. Join Pastor Casey this Fall for a summary of the content and message of the book of Revelation, not from the perspective of charting an exact path for the future, but as a reset for our understanding of reality, of what our lives are all about, and of how we envision the “end” of this present world. Starts 10/9 at 9am in the Great Room!

Trunk or Treat: we need YOU! Starting this Sunday, we have sign ups in the foyer to help with our first annual Trunk or Treat on October 29th from 1-4pm. If you don’t know, Trunk or Treat is an event when cars line up in the parking lot, decorate their trunks, and offer treats/candy to children who walk from car to car. We are working hard to promote this to the community, and need a variety of help. In the foyer you will see the sign-up sheet with multiple categories of help needed. If you have any questions, please reach out to Pastor Casey.

Winter Coat Drive – VCL’s Missions Committee is partnering with Amvets, Wheeling Helping Hands, and churches in the Lincolnshire area to collect winter coats and accessories for refugees. Gently used and new coats, hats, scarves and gloves can be dropped off at the box in the lobby through Oct. 9th. Questions can be directed towards Miranda and Sam George.

Women’s Connections – True Woman Curated Conference at VCL – Please join the Women of VCL for a one-day curated conference of True Woman ’22 by the Revive our Hearts Ministry. On October 8th we will gather in the Great room from 8 am to 4 pm to immerse in biblical teaching and deep discussion with our sisters in Christ. All women and teenage girls are welcome, and we encourage you to invite ladies from outside of VCL! We ask that you give $25 for registration to this event which will help cover food and teaching booklet. The Sign -Up sheet is in the foyer, or you can call or email Faith Beans or Karen Kissinger for more information or to register. We look forward to seeing you there!

We are planning a baptism service on October 23. If you are interested in baptism please contact Pastor Jim. After the baptism service the Aska Family will be hosting a lunch in the Great Room for anyone who would like to celebrate baptism. If you would like to attend please sign up on the Friendship Register.

You can still join a growth group! While we just had our growth group launch (an easy opportunity to join a growth group), if you are still interested in joining a group, you can reach out to Pastor Casey any time of the year. Growth groups are a vital part of church life at VCL!

VCL Blood Drive—Our next Red Cross blood drive is Tuesday, Oct. 18, one month away.  Please give if you are able.  Appointments are scheduled every 15 minutes from 1:00—6:00p.m.  Thirteen slots have already been taken.  To get the time you want, contact Ed Manzo or sign up on the Red Cross blood donor website.

Thursday Morning Bible Study at 9:30 a.m. Please join us for a study of 1 & 2 Peter. The relevance of these books to today’s social and religious climate makes them a particularly interesting study. The guide book, 1-2 Peter and Jude by Jonathan K. Dodson, is available for $7.00. If you have any questions feel free to contact Carol Marshall, or 847-274-9900

Welcome Center: We hope you’ve noticed, we frequently have treats to go with our coffee at the welcome center on Sundays. You are invited to contribute at a time that works for you (and we have openings on our schedule.) Some ideas are: a purchased sheet cake (possibly celebrating a special birthday?) homemade cookies or bars, a bowl of cuties or apples or a salty snack. You may have another idea, I’d love to hear it! To schedule a Sunday and find out more info, please email
