Ministering to the US Navy

Jared and Tammy were raised in the Midwest—he in Indiana and she in Ohio.  They met while attending Taylor University.  Jared graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible, Christian Education, and History.  Tammy graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work.  They were married in September 1996 and moved to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) where Jared was already pursuing his Master of Divinity.  Jared was a full-time student and Tammy was working full-time as a social worker in Waukegan, IL.

Jared and Tammy began attending Village Church of Lincolnshire (VCL) in the Fall of 1996.  Jared soon signed on as an adult volunteer with the VCL youth group.  His ministry at the church culminated with his pastoral internship with Rev. Lee Eclov.  Jared had the distinct privilege of being Pastor Lee’s first intern as he began his tenure as the Senior Pastor at VCL.  After graduation from TEDS in December 1998, Jared and Tammy moved to Phoenix, AZ, for a post-graduate internship at Camelback Bible Church.  They were thrilled to return to VCL in September 2000 after Jared was called to serve as the Associate Pastor.  Jared’s role allowed him to lead a variety of ministry areas, including youth, compassion, adult education, and Growth Groups.  Tammy continued her social work career working at Glenview Terrace Nursing Center in Glenview, IL.  Jared was ordained as an EFCA pastor in 2005.  Jared and Tammy were blessed to be a part of the VCL church family for more than 10 years, resigning his position in December 2010 to become a Navy chaplain.

With the full support of Pastor Lee, the Elders, and the congregation at VCL, Jared pursued his dream of becoming a chaplain in the United States Navy, receiving his commission as a lieutenant in October 2010.  After attending Officer Development School in Newport, RI, and Navy Chaplaincy School in Colombia, SC, Jared was assigned to his first duty station at Naval Air Facility El Centro in El Centro, CA, in April 2011.  As the base chaplain Jared’s duties are varied, including leading the Protestant worship service, counseling, and facilitating community relations projects.  Tammy enjoys leading a women’s Bible study and volunteering at the base thrift store.  They will be stationed in El Centro until April 2014.

If you would like to contact Jared and Tammy to learn more about their ministry in the military—or for any other reason—they would enjoy hearing from you.
