Heartwarming: What the Bible says about loving the Lord (April 2017)

[/toggle]

This sermon series arose from my own questions. After his resurrection Jesus asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” I’ve wondered if Jesus would ask that of me, and, honestly, I’ve wondered sometimes if I do. So I decided that we would explore what the Bible says about that together during the Sundays leading up to Easter.

We begin with two sermons looking  at two key Old Testament passages—one commanding us to love the Lord our God and the other, Psalm 116, a heartfelt expression, “I love the Lord!” Then we turn our attention to five New Testament passages that help us to think specifically about our love for Jesus Christ. We’ll conclude on Easter Sunday looking at that question of Jesus’ that stirred me in the first place: “Do you love me?”

The Loves of Our Lives - Scripture and Christ (Feb-April 2017)

From February through mid-April we will focus our preaching on two related series. First, in February, four sermons drawn from Psalm 119, the 176-verse celebration of the treasure of Scripture. We will look at four sections of that psalm. It is, of course, the longest ‘chapter’ in the Bible, with 176 verses, broken into a Hebrew acrostic where the lines of each 8-verse section begin with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It is as if every letter has a voice in the lyric of praise and contemplation on that “Treasure in Your Hands”—the Bible.

We also offer a recording of about a dozen especially precious passages of Scripture read by our own Dr. John Van Wyk. You can grab a CD from the foyer, as well as download this recording to your computer or phone .

The Frontier of the God-Blessed Life: The Life of Abraham in Gen. 12-22 (September 2015-November 2016; January 2017)

“What does Scripture say? ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’” (Rom. 4:3). Abraham is the father of God’s people, Israel. And since we gentile believers are grafted into that great tree, he is our spiritual father as well. All because of his faith in God. Abraham’s faith was not born full-grown. It was a two-steps-forward-one-step-back kind of spiritual schooling.

God told Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” In one way or another, that’s how it starts for all of us. In the months ahead we’ll explore “the frontier of the God-blessed life” by studying Genesis 12-22.

This study, with a break in December, will run through January.

On Alert: Guarding Against the Enemy of Our Souls (July-August 2016)

It is curious how captivated the world around us is with the devil and his demons. TV shows, movies, books—the subject is everywhere. Yet people know little of the truth as taught in Scripture. Christians must know how to recognize and resist the devil’s work or we will become his victims. This series highlights some key passages teaching us about our enemy.

Dispatched: When Jesus’ disciples are sent out (June/July 2016)

Luke 10:1-37

Plenty of people wanted to follow Jesus till he gave them a dose of reality: “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” When a man asked to attend to his aged and dying father, Jesus said abruptly, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” And to a man who wanted to go home and say goodbye to everyone first Jesus said, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Following Jesus always pushes us out of our comfort zone.

In Luke 10, Jesus sent out 72 disciples, two by two, to go ahead to towns he planned to visit, healing the sick and telling people that the kingdom of heaven was near. So what do we take from this passage? We’re giving three sermons to that question, concluding with the intriguing story of the Good Samaritan. As in all parables, there is more to that story than meets the eye.

Who you are: Our identities as Christians (May-June 2016)

Years ago a woman stepped into an elevator and came face to face with a movie star. “Are you the real Robert Redford??” she gushed. “Only when I’m alone,” he replied. Who are you when you’re alone? Becoming a Christian changes our identity to the core. “If anyone is in Christ the new creation has come.” Jesus told Nicodemus, “You must be born again.” Our personalities and appearances may not change, but Jesus certainly changes our identity in many ways.

For six weeks we will look at some texts of Scripture that help us understand our identity as God’s people. I have kicked off this series on May 1 reminding the church that Christians must be small and unpretentious, like children. On May 8 I will show you your birthplace and on May 15 I’ll fit you with an ambassador’s sash.

To round out the series, I asked three other preachers to choose passages that have been significant to them in understanding their identity in Christ. Anne Tohme will look at how Christians may be “Pressed but Not Crushed,” from 2 Cor. 4. Pastor Michael will preach on John 8 and the freedom Christ brings his followers. Finally, Raymond Wunderlich, one of our elders and a professional Christian counselor, will look at both Psalm 139 and 1 Peter 2 in a sermon called “The Who I Am Made to Be.”

Firmly to the end - Persevering in our faith (Feb-April 2016)

Taught from Hebrews

The Bible, it seems, gives much more attention to the danger of falling away from our faith than we do. Nowhere is that message stronger than the book of Hebrews. Again and again, in various ways, believers are encouraged, warned, even begged to “hold our original conviction firmly to the very end” (3:14). We’re taught various powerful inducements to persevering. In these sermons, all covering long portions of the book, our faith will be bolstered.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is (Jan-Feb 2016)

A few months ago, while visiting with several other pastors, I realized that we often undervalue the significance of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Soon after, I mentioned to someone at Village Church that I was thinking about preaching on the Holy Spirit, and she responded, “I’d really like that. I need it.” So I’ve crafted a six-week sermon series, drawn from six different passages, entitled, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is.”

The goal of this series is not so much to articulate the nature of the Holy Spirit (one with the Father, fully God, etc.) but how the Holy Spirit works to dramatically change the life of a believer. We’ll begin the new year with Jesus’ intriguing comment in Luke 11:13, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

In the following weeks we’ll study Rom. 8:14-27 to see the extraordinary relationship help the Spirit brings us. Then we’ll look at the fruit of the Spirit in Gal. 5, the sober reminder that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit in 1 Cor. 6, and finally the freedom the Holy Spirit gives us (2 Cor. 3).

Christmas, To Be Continued...

Jesus first advent–his first coming–put in motion great works of God that will be completed in his second advent. Each week we explore a different phase of these works of Christ–bringing in God’s kingdom, defeating Satan, displaying Christ’s glory, and his salvation. We’ll end with the challenge to be alert while we wait for Jesus to come again.

Like a Diamond (Fall 2015)

Like a Diamond: The multi-faceted beauty of the Gospel

Jesus’ invitation to the gospel is simple: “Repent and believe the good news” that Jesus Christ died and rose again for sinners. But the gospel is also multifaceted like a diamond. Each ‘face’ of the gospel is beautiful in its own right—new birth, the blood of the Lamb, our interceding High Priest, adoption, the church, and our hope of heaven—to name only some. Each sermon in this series focuses on one of those facets.

Unlikely Heroes: What faith looks like (Summer 2015)

The measure of a man or woman, as far as the Bible is concerned, is their faith. In the New Testament Jesus often chastised his disciples for their “little faith.” But the Gospels record some surprising examples of faith: a centurion, an almost-penniless widow, a blind man confronting blinder leaders, and a woman who had the faith to anoint Jesus for his burial before he died. Our series will begin with these four stories.

Among the examples in the Old Testament is Gideon—who added “putting out a fleece” to the jargon of faith. In Judges 6 and 7 we see Gideon struggle with trusting God in four ways. Through August we’ll look at this story together.

Fingerprints: Celebrating Village Church’s 40th anniversary

In May and June we will celebrate our extraordinary privilege of sending out so many of our people to serve Jesus in other places. Our Core Values say, “We love to put our fingerprints on those who pass through our congregation as our means of extending the influence of our church.” We will study passages of Scripture that underscore this important ministry, that reminds us of the centrality of missions, and a study of the usually-overlooked wee letter, Philemon.

After Life

“After Life”: Our Sunday morning emphasis for April

Before Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven he made some astonishing promises to his disciples—that they would do even greater works than he had, that even though he would depart yet he would still come to us, and that we would have peace unparalleled in the world. For the three Sundays after Easter we’re going to focus our worship and preaching on these promises from John 14:11-27 in a series entitled “After Life.”

Christians are not just religious, nor do we merely have a distinctive worldview. The Lord’s gift of the Holy Spirit brings changes to our lives and fellowship with one another that simply cannot be over-exaggerated! The resurrection was just the beginning of our life in Christ.

Getting God's Ear (January-Easter 2015)

Getting God’s Ear: Sermons from 2 Chronicles

The people of Israel were terrible listeners. They wouldn’t listen to God’s Word in Scripture. They wouldn’t listen to generations of prophets. They wouldn’t listen to their experience or even to their pain. And finally God gave them over to their enemies. The Jews were captives in a faraway country for 70 years and when they finally were allowed to return to their land they were a shadow of their former selves. It was then that the book of Chronicles was written, some 500 years after King David. The writer took Israel’s ancient stories from 1&2 Samuel and 1&2 Kings and used them as sermons to remind Israel what it takes to listen to God. Some of these become our texts now.

2 Chronicles begins with King Solomon’s wonderful prayer for wisdom to govern. We’re told about the building of the temple where people could worship God in his glory. The theme of the book is 2 Chron. 7:14, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” The passages that follow illustrate these words, phrase by phrase.

This is the context of our sermons and worship in January through March. The series title is “Then I Will Hear from Heaven.” 2 Chronicles focuses on the spiritual revivals in Israel as a reminder to their descendants and us so many years later of what it means for a people to listen to God. Nothing in human experience is so wonderful as our relationship with God made possible through Jesus Christ. Second Chronicles enables us to nurture and guard our relationship with the Lord so we have his ear when we call out to him.

A few months ago we administered a simple survey which revealed dozens of ways in which people in our congregation feel harassed and helpless. One way we can help is to study again what the Bible says to Christians under pressure, and the epistle of James is perfect for that assignment.

James, who was Jesus’ brother, was one of the leaders of the Jerusalem church which quickly came under fierce pressure. Later he wrote to believers “scattered among the nations.” In blunt and practical terms he instructs us in pressurized living—how to see the benefit in trials, how to manage our anger and our words, how to regard poverty, the anatomy of quarrels, and how to seek healing when you’re sick. James often makes us squirm but he also teaches us how to put our faith into action.

What's New (Summer 2014)

WHAT’S NEW: Cardinal doctrines from the New Testament

During July and August almost everyone in Village Church is engaged in the Community Bible Experience, reading through the New Testament together. Our preaching during these two months is coordinated with our reading. Each week we will preach on one of the great New Testament doctrines from the assigned reading for the week.

Doctrine is never an academic issue in the Bible. It is always practical; it always protects and shapes believers. These sermons will do that as well.

Our Church Home (Spring 2014)

GETTING CLOSER TO HOME

After thinking about it a long time our Elders concluded that no word captures the heart of Village Church any better than home. Last year we rewrote our Core Values to reflect that. Recently we have been exploring ways we might visualize this identity in a new logo, our website, perhaps some redecorating of our foyer, and even the possibility of a garden along the bike path fronting our property. But the heart of our reason for this focus is found in the Bible. For two months on Sunday mornings we will look at passages of Scripture that shape our view of VCL as home.

Then You Will Know That I Am the Lord (Winter 2014)

THEN YOU WILL KNOW THAT I AM THE LORD: Sermons from Exodus 1-15

To know God and remember well what he has done for us Pastor Lee Eclov No matter how long we’ve known him, it is hard for us to remember just how great and gracious God is. That’s a problem because Christians must know God if we are to trust him properly. The book of Exodus records how God revealed himself to his people (and to their Egyptian oppressors). We will spend the first part of 2014 studying the early chapters of Exodus to refresh our memory and relationship with our great God. The sermon series is called, “Then You Will Know that I am the Lord.” We will think together about the paradoxical suffering of God-blessed people, step close the heat of God’s holiness at the burning bush, and see our God do battle with the gods of Egypt. We will see blood on door posts, taste the hurried yeast-less bread, and watch the waters part for the redeemed people of God. And we will sing with Moses, “Who among the gods is like you, Lord?”

The Child of Promise (Winter 2013)

THE CHILD OF PROMISE: Jesus Christ Fulfills the Old Testament Covenants

As the Old Testament unfolds God begins line after line that ultimately lead to Jesus Christ. People, stories, symbols, prophecies—all wending their way across centuries to the manger in Bethlehem. Central to those Old Testament lines were the great covenants God made. During this season we study how God’s Covenant promises with Abraham, Moses, David, and eventually the “New Covenant” promised to Jeremiah and others lead straight to Christ. These great covenants are not merely Old Testament lore; they are our birthright, the legacy passed on to us. To remember these is to grow in our faith and our love for the Lord who has worked all things together for our good.

The Church that Jesus Builds: Acts 1-11 (Fall 2013)

THE CHURCH THAT JESUS BUILDS: ACTS 1-11

Churches today sometimes pursue growth the way prospectors frantically joined a gold rush. “Thar’s gold in them there hills!” The growth and health of the early church is evident throughout the book of Acts yet the means God used then are unfamiliar now. For example, except for the very first days no one seems to be counting people beyond the generalization, “many were added.” The church prayed like crazy. They prayed till the Holy Spirit set them afire. They prayed till the walls shook. Devout believers were martyred and hypocritical believers, on at least one occasion, were struck dead. We don’t read much about leadership in the book of Acts but we do find leaders who cleared their schedules for prayer and preaching. Other highly esteemed leaders were ordained to be sure all in the church had food. The church grew by the outward press of persecution and through their own seismic clashes of biblical differences. Much in Acts is descriptive not prescriptive, yet here we can find tracks for our church to run on spiritually as we go forward. We’ve chosen to study ten passages from Acts 1-11 and have titled this series, “The Church That Jesus Builds.”

Keeping Our Balance (Summer 2013)

Keeping Our Balance: Homosexuality

The rapid widespread acceptance of homosexual behavior and same-sex marriage has caught many of us off-guard. We’ve checked and rechecked what the Bible says. We’re becoming sensitized to the struggles of friends, family, and fellow believers over their sexual identity. We’ve realized how unkind we’ve been sometimes. We’ve also realized that we must bring both courage and grace to our convictions and conversations about this subject.
In this short series, three preachers from Village Church address this subject from three angles.

Inroads (Summer 2013)

INROADS: How the Church Preaches the Gospel

A couple of years ago I led a young man to the Lord. He had come to our church for just a couple of weeks when he told me he wanted to “convert.” He had come to church in the first place because one of our seminary students took a personal interest in him and spent time being with him. When he came to church the first time, as wary as could be, he was hugged by one of the grandmas, and others welcomed him like one of the family. He was staggered by how different Christians were than he had expected. It was soon after that I used the phrase for the first time, “The church preached.” I’ve marveled to see all the ways our congregation represents the good news of Jesus Christ to lost people, and the fact that people do come to Christ through us. While each of us must share and show the love of Christ to lost people, we forget sometimes the potency of our collective effect. No one comes to faith without many different Christian witnesses usually over a long time. This summer we will look especially at the way that the church together makes inroads into the world around us, even when people are hostile to the good news of Jesus Christ. Our focus will be 1 Peter 2 and 3, where we learn about the gravitational pull of a holy people on those around them. We will also study the role of evangelists in the New Testament and of partnerships with others in the faith. Finally, three sermons from Psalms will address the kinds of things we can all tell others about—God’s forgiveness (Ps. 51), his sustaining grace (Ps 73), and his mighty deeds (Ps 145).

Life in the Kingdom (Spring 2013)

Life in the Kingdom: Matthew 13 & 18

We Americans have a tough time grasping the concept of royalty. And when it comes to how to behave in the presence of holy royalty, there is not a person on earth who comes to it naturally. The Gospel of Matthew introduces us to Jesus as the King of the kingdom of heaven, and his disciples as his subjects. Matthew wrote his gospel to teach us how to bend low before Christ. He has his work cut out for him! During the first three months of 2013 we learned what kind of king Jesus is, and then what kind of subjects we are to be (from the beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount). In April and May we will look at two additional chapters—Matthew 13 and 18, a series entitled, “Life in the Kingdom.” Matthew 13 is a collection of parables—“The kingdom of heaven is like…” We look through the stained glass windows of these pictures to see what our citizenship in God’s kingdom is like. Then, in May, we switch to Matthew 18, which begins with Jesus drawing children to him and telling us, more cryptically than we realize, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”This chapter warns us of becoming lost sheep, and what we should do when one of our fellow disciples wanders away from God. If you cannot be with us in person, you can read or listen to each sermon here.

The Heart of the Subject (Winter 2013)

THE HEART OF THE SUBJECT:

Learning from Matthew how Christians serve our King

Pastor Lee Eclov We Americans have a tough time grasping the concept of royalty. During the first three months of 2013 we will invite God to teach us, through Matthew, just what kind of King Jesus is in chapters 1-4. In those chapters we’re told that both John the Baptist and Jesus told the people who came to them, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” But what does repentance look like? Jesus begins his Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7) with what we call “the Beatitudes”—the Blessings. They describe a repentant heart—which is why this series is called, “The Heart of the Subject.” I believe the rest of Jesus’ sermon simply shows us from one example after another why his disciples must “get low.” God offers extraordinary benefits—beatitudes—to us when we learn to be subjects of our King. If you cannot be with us in person, you can read or listen to each sermon here.

Streams in the Desert (Fall 2012)

STREAMS IN THE DESERT: Refreshing Our Parched Souls from Isaiah

Hot and dry. After the summer of 2012 we certainly know what that feels like! Ever felt that way in your soul? Like you are plodding through “a dry and weary land where there is no water”? The Old Testament prophet Isaiah wrote to people who were parched at heart. Most didn’t even know it—or care. So God invites us, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters.” This fall we will go to the well of Isaiah to restore our souls as individuals and as a church. Come join us, and if you can’t be with us, listen or read the sermons here.

On Earth, Peace (Winter 2011)

Growing in the peace Christ brings

The familiar old translation from Luke’s Christmas story, “Peace on earth, goodwill too men,” misses the point. “On earth peace to those on whom his favor rests,” is better. Peace to those whom God blesses, and God blesses us through Jesus Christ. For six weeks we look at some of the dimensions of the peace of Christ.

1 Corinthians 1-3, 12-13: Let's Put Our Heads Together (Fall 2011)

This summer, we learned about wisdom from Proverbs, and in 1 Corinthians wecontinue on that theme, but from a new perspective. The gospel turns the world’s wisdom on its ear. “The message of the cross,” wrote Paul, “is foolishness to those who are perishing.” And later he says, “For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom…” Our common bond in the church is this “foolishness of God”—the message of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Our church is constantly changing. There are always new people becoming part of our congregation. These sermons and the worship services that enfold them will remind us of the gospel center that binds us together as believers, and of how crucial it is for us to love and serve one another.

Proverbs 1-9: Who is Wise and Understanding among you? (Summer 2010)

We tend to want wisdom in the moment, in a crisis, the way we want an emergency care center nearby. We also like the idea of knowing someone who is wise, who sees the forest even standing in the middle of the trees. We want someone who can get to the heart of a matter—our matter—with direct simplicity. Kind of a personal consultant.
But how important is it to you to grow wise? If it can just happen naturally, easily, we’d all be for it. But how many of us have made it a lifelong project to grow wise? Who pursues wisdom with the dogged training of a runner preparing for a marathon?
Proverbs teaches us that pursuing wisdom is a life or death decision. That it will make or break you.  Proverbs teaches us how to grow wise—slowly, gradually, deeply. Join us this summer as we study Proverbs 1-9 in our morning worship services. -Pastor Lee Eclov You can also Listen to our sermons at http://sermon.net/evcl
