Guide for Home Worship: 11/29/20

The Light of the World

This Sunday we begin our series on the person and work of Christ for Advent. Today we look to Jesus’ famous words “I am the light of the world” in John 8:12-20 to find hope in even the darkest times.

General Announcements

No Sunday School 11/29 or 12/6: The Sunday school series “The Parables of Jesus” will resume on 12/13.

Bi-Weekly Virtual Prayer Gathering:  This Tuesday night (12/1) at 7:30 PM, we’ll be gathering on Zoom for our bi-weekly prayer meeting. Come join us for a meaningful time of prayer—all from the comfort of your own living room. Zoom details to follow via email. If you have a prayer request or an update, please send it to office@evcl.org.

Annual Congregational Meeting: On December 6 at 6 PM, we’ll be gathering for our annual meeting. This year is especially important. In addition to voting on our budget for next year and other regular items, we’ll be reviewing the Transition Team’s final report, voting on by-law changes, and electing a pastoral search committee. We’re asking that all members make it a point to attend. As the date approaches, we’ll determine whether to conduct this meeting in person or online. If we go with the former, we’ll follow the same protocols as we do on Sunday morning and will provide ways for those who can’t attend in person to still participate (offer feedback, ask questions, and vote) online.

At the meeting, we will be voting to approve the following Officers:
Elder—Jim Stamoolis (1st 3-year term);
Finance Committee—Chair – Michael Wall, Treasurer – Dan Kissinger, Financial Secretary – Jan Nelson.

Pastoral Search Committee: Bob Betts, Rich Soderberg, Henry Van Dixhorn, Nels Flatebo, Kaye Lyons, Kim Cordes, Peter Marshall, Ann Forman, Mary Jo Rust, Chrissi Wall.

Upcoming By-Law Changes: We’ll be voting on several changes to the by-laws at our annual meeting. If you haven’t yet had a chance, please review the changes and reach out to Bryan Just at bajust@tiu.edu with any comments or questions. You can find the proposed changes along with a letter of explanation in an email Pastor Kenny sent out on 11/2. If you can’t find that, email office@evcl.org and we’ll be happy to send you another copy.

Operation Christmas Child: Thank you to all who participated in Operation Christmas Child by packing a shoebox and/or praying for the children around the world who will receive them. This year we collected and/or built online 96 gift-filled shoeboxes! Your box is now enroute to a processing center from where it will be shipped to the receiving country and delivered to the local church. From there, your shoebox will finally be placed in the hands of a child! Every shoebox is a Gospel opportunity.

If you missed packing a box, you still can do so online at https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/buildonline/ Our goal page link is no longer available. You can pack a shoebox anytime of the year. Those boxes that are packed after the collection week will be sent to “sensitive” countries throughout the year as the opportunity presents.

VCL Women! Our Thursday group will begin our book study on January 7, 2021! We’re excited to study the video/book series entitled “Breathe” by Priscilla Shirer! The book can be purchased for $12 (exact change please!) on December 3, or in the church office during the week. If paying by check please make payable to Village Church of Lincolnshire. On January 7 we will go back to our normal schedule of 9:30-11:00. In the meantime though, we’re continuing to meet 9:30-10:30 each week with fellowship, a devotional, and prayer together. As always, Covid guidelines are continuing to be followed with masks and social distancing.

Is God Calling You To Lead a Growth Group? Now as much as ever, we need community. Growth groups at VCL are groups where we can get together to pray, read God’s word, and fellowship together as brothers and sisters in God’s family. They are a vitally important part of church life, as well as our individual discipleship. We find ourselves in need of new growth group leaders, people want to learn from experienced leaders what it would look like to be part of forming new groups. You don’t need to have any prior knowledge or experience, all you have to have is the desire to help people grow spiritually in community. If you’d be interested in helping out or finding out more, please contact Pastor Casey at cdwyer@evcl.org.

Would you like to use the Great Room? The Great Room is now available for groups of 25 or less to use throughout the week. To keep things safe and sanitary, you’ll need to reserve a time and follow a set of guidelines we’ve developed. For more information, please email office@evcl.org.

Not-So Daily Office: Pastors Kenny and Casey are on Facebook Live at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. During this time they will read a scripture passage and have a time of prayer. Copies of these times of worship will then be posted on our website: evcl.org/daily-office

Offering: During this time, it’s more important than ever that we continue to embody our trust in the Lord’s provision through faithful, sacrificial giving. Please visit http://evcl.org/give/ and make your offering as an intentional act of faith. Although online giving is preferred during this time, you may also write and mail your checks to Village Church of Lincolnshire, 201 Riverwoods Rd, Lake Forest, IL 60045
