Guide for Home Worship: 10/16/22
This Sunday, as we continue on The Way of Becoming, we will explore how in each moment of disorientation there is both a call to run to God and the temptation to run away. Pastor Casey will look to the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness in Matthew 4:1-11, where Christ shows us a path to resist temptation and choose instead a deeper relationship with God.
Blessed Endurance: the message of the Book of Revelation —Fall series in Hour in the Word – The book of Revelation has a reputation. For some of us, it confuses, bewilders, and scares us. For others, we think it is full of hidden codes, secret allusions, and geopolitical predictions. Yet this book was written, not to confuse or even give exact predictions of the future, but to fill God’s people with hope, a hope so strong that it gives us the power to endure anything that comes our way. Join Pastor Casey this Fall for a summary of the content and message of the book of Revelation, not from the perspective of charting an exact path for the future, but as a reset for our understanding of reality, of what our lives are all about, and of how we envision the “end” of this present world. Starts 10/9 at 9am in the Great Room!
Trunk or Treat: we need YOU! Starting this Sunday, we have sign ups in the foyer to help with our first annual Trunk or Treat on October 29th from 1-4pm. If you don’t know, Trunk or Treat is an event when cars line up in the parking lot, decorate their trunks, and offer treats/candy to children who walk from car to car. We are working hard to promote this to the community, and need a variety of help. In the foyer you will see the sign-up sheet with multiple categories of help needed. If you have any questions, please reach out to Pastor Casey.
Virtual Prayer Gathering: This Tuesday night (10/18) at 7:00 pm, we’ll be gathering on Zoom for our prayer meeting. Come join us for a meaningful time of prayer—all from the comfort of your own living room. Zoom details to follow via email. If you have a prayer request or an update, please send it to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note: we will now meet via Zoom on the first and third Tuesday of the month.
Samaritan’s Purse—During the next few weeks, you will have the opportunity to pack a shoebox (or more than one) with a variety of gifts that will be given to a child who is in a desperate situation. We are collecting shoeboxes at VCL again this year. Simply bring your filled box to VCL by Sunday, November 13. Click here to build a box online or to have a box built for you!! There is also a link to follow your box online. Empty shoeboxes are available at VCL. Please remember, due to customs regulations, toothpaste and candy are no longer permitted in shoeboxes. Questions or concerns, contact Connie Kochkin at email@example.com
We are planning a baptism service on October 23. If you are interested in baptism please contact Pastor Jim. After the baptism service the Aska Family will be hosting a lunch in the Great Room for anyone who would like to celebrate baptism. If you would like to attend please sign up on the Friendship Register.
You can still join a growth group! While we just had our growth group launch (an easy opportunity to join a growth group), if you are still interested in joining a group, you can reach out to Pastor Casey any time of the year. Growth groups are a vital part of church life at VCL!
VCL Blood Drive—Our next Red Cross blood drive is Tuesday, Oct. 18, one month away. Please give if you are able. Appointments are scheduled every 15 minutes from 1:00—6:00p.m. Thirteen slots have already been taken. To get the time you want, contact Ed Manzo or sign up on the Red Cross blood donor website.
Thursday Morning Bible Study at 9:30 a.m. Please join us for a study of 1 & 2 Peter. The relevance of these books to today’s social and religious climate makes them a particularly interesting study. The guide book, 1-2 Peter and Jude by Jonathan K. Dodson, is available for $7.00. If you have any questions feel free to contact Carol Marshall, firstname.lastname@example.org or 847-274-9900
Welcome Center: We hope you’ve noticed, we frequently have treats to go with our coffee at the welcome center on Sundays. You are invited to contribute at a time that works for you (and we have openings on our schedule.) Some ideas are: a purchased sheet cake (possibly celebrating a special birthday?) homemade cookies or bars, a bowl of cuties or apples or a salty snack. You may have another idea, I’d love to hear it! To schedule a Sunday and find out more info, please email email@example.com.
